Making a World of Difference for older people in Bristol

bikesLocal Bristol resident, Lizzie Woodall, has started working with cycling charity Life Cycle UK, after winning an award from the Vodafone World of Difference programme. (http://worldofdifference.vodafone.co.uk) The award provides funding for four months of part-time work with a charitable organisation. Life Cycle UK is a Bristol-based charity that helps people take up cycling and they run practical activities such as cycle training and regular group rides.

Thanks to the Vodafone World of Difference programme, ride leader Lizzie Woodall has started a gentle cycling group for the over 55s in Lockleaze and Horfield. Lizzie said, ‘to be able to offer gentle exercise and social activities to another community in Bristol is a positive step. We have seen the current groups in Easton and Southville grow in popularity, and I’m thankful to the Vodafone World of Difference programme which has enabled us to expand the project.’ Thursday 19th April will see the Cameron Community Centre in Lockleaze host a Silver Cyclists open day, with free bike maintenance and cycling taster sessions available from 12-3pm.

Silver Cyclists celebrated the launch of its new Spring Ride Programme with a Tea Party for all members on 23 March 2012. The tea party, with cakes donated by Waitrose, gave Silver Cyclists an opportunity to find out about new cycle rides in Lockleaze and Horfield, as well as meet each other and learn more about group rides for older people on quiet roads in and around Bristol. The aim of the project is to help older people rediscover cycling, and to engage the community with a social activity that promotes wellbeing and improves people’s confidence.

Poppy Brett, Director of Life Cycle UK which runs the group said of the event, ‘we had a great turn out, and we hope to run more events like this in the future to encourage interest from new participants. We have an exciting ride programme for 2012 offering an opportunity for over 55s to return to cycling and to meet others’

The next group ride takes place on 15 April 2012 and has a special ‘Ride on the Wild Side’ theme, giving cyclists an opportunity to hear the dawn chorus with bird expert Ed Drewitt.
