As part of its contribution to Black History month and in celebration of Jamaica, Trinidad & Tobago’s 50 years of Independence, Ujima Radio 98FM presents ” Dubplate to Dubstep” youth radio shows. Researched, written, produced and broadcast by young people 17-25 from the St Paul’s and surrounding community participants have taken part in the 8 week Heritage Lottery Funded youth project, in partnership with Bristol Records Office, M-Shed and Watershed.Participants have been trained in all technical aspects of media for both film making and radio broadcasting, as well as researching black history in Bristol with Edson Burton and visits to the M-Shed and Bristol Records Office.

Shows one and two Oct 29th & 30th 1-2pm outline the first phase of the groups learning, looking through their eyes at the cultural history of Bristol’s Jamaican and Caribbean community, exploring their visits to cultural organisations, as well as personal experiences of the media training aspects of the Dubplate to Dubstep project.

Show three on Oct 31st, 1-2pm is the main “Dubplate to Dubstep” and is a live broadcast encompassing the full story of Jamaican Dub Plate Vinyl classics and how these early sounds influenced the landscape of Bristol’s musical history across 50 years, bringing us up to date with the current Dub Step of today. Featuring engaging interviews with key musical legends like DJ Krust, Mykael Riley (Steel Pulse), DJ Derek, Talisman, and producer Pinch, the live show ensures young broadcasters can showcase their newly acquired media skills. Participants in this project will be offered a platform for a longer term radio show with Ujima 98FM
