Sadler’s Wells Dance Studio

Sadler’s Wells is a world leader in contemporary dance presenting a vibrant year-round programme of dance of every kind, bringing the best of international and British dance to audiences at three theatres in London.

Sadler’s Wells also commission and produce original new work for stages and tour it to major arts venues around the world. Since 2005 they have helped to bring 80 new dance works to the stage.bb3

The main theatre is located on an historic site in Rosebery Avenue in Islington. They also present work in their studio theatre – the Lilian Baylis Studio – and in our West End home, The Peacock Theatre.

Sadler’s Wells is a thriving arts organisation and a registered UK charity. They work hard to maintain diverse revenue streams to ensure financial stability.

Associate Artists

Sadler’s Wells provides a home for artists. Our group of 16 Associate Artists and companies are at the heart of Sadler’s Wells and they represent the most exciting dance talent working in contemporary dance today. We support our Associate Artists by commissioning new work from them, providing access to Sadler’s Wells’ resources such as rehearsal studios, technical expertise, office space and a creative base.

Audiences

Half a million people come to see a performance at Sadler’s Wells’ theatres each year and another 130,000 see our productions at venues around the world, due to the variety of our programming that enables us to entice large audiences from mixed background and age groups. The variety of our programming enables us to attract large audiences from diverse backgrounds and age groups with a wide range of cultural interests.

Jonzi D is the artistic director of Breakin Convention and Jonzi D Projects.

Since the beginning, Jonzi d has been heavily active in British hip hop culture including rapping and b-boying.

Since he graduated from the London Contemporary Dance School of art, Jonzi has been committed to the development of hip hop theatre.

 

 

Artistic Director of Breakin’ Convention and Sadler’s Wells Associate Artist, Jonzi D presents a triple bill including his acclaimed solo, The Letter.

Jonzi has been committed to the development of Hip Hop theatre, creating Lyrikal Fearta in 1995, and Aeroplane Man in 1999.bb2

As an MC, Jonzi has worked with The Roots, Steve Williamson, Mannafest, Lenny Henry, MC Mell ‘O’ and toured with Gangstarr. He appeared on HBO’s Def Poetry Jam, Channel 4’s Faking It, and his short films Silence da bitchin’ and Aeroplane Man were also screened on Channel 4.

 

He is creator and host of the successful Apricot Jam and Vertikal Cypher infamous Hip Hop music and open mic sessions. He presented the 2005 4Dance for Channel 4 television and was the performance mentor for Urban Classic at Hackney Empire in February 2006.

The Breaking Convention is an annual international event produced by the Sadlers Wells Dance Theatre and was founded in 2004.

Since its inception, its artistic direction and play wright has been dictated by Jonzi D

 

The three day festival has a packed programme of UK and world      premieres, new and explorative hip hop theatre work, plus local acts, DJs,  graffiti art, workshops, free styling and much more! Hosted by Jonzi D and  Monie Love (Sun & Mon nights). Check out our trailer on the right hand side for more information.

As well as the 3 day main even they also host a tour which stretches across  the UK from Bristol to Bournemouth.

 

Presenting dance by companies and crews from across the globe. With live performances from top hip hop dance crews including ILL-Abilities (International), Ukweli Roach (UK) and Wanted Posse (France).

Plus local acts, DJs, graffiti art, workshops, free styling and much more! Breakin’ Convention is more than just a show – it’s an experience!
