Professional drummer Steve Laffy is hosting a FREE percussion workshop on Saturday 31st January at St. Paul’s Learning and Family Centre. Whether you’re a pro percussionist or if you’ve never drummed before, this workshop has something for everyone. Enjoy a hands-on experiences exploring rhythms through using an array of interesting percussion instruments from different cultures. The workshop is open to everyone of all abilities aged 12+. Please note that spaces are limited to 25 people – so BOOK NOW.


10.30 am Discover and explore your own natural rhythms, and those of the world around us. Try for yourself playing many unusual and interesting percussion instruments from around the world.


11.50 am Learn the basics of playing the drum kit. Then to play together in an amazing drum & percussion band using authentic world percussion instruments.

12.30 pm finish

Learning outcomes: By the end of this drumming workshop everyone will have had the opportunity to a unique ‘hands-on’ experience of exploring rhythms through using a large array of interesting percussion instruments from many cultures. They will develop their confidence in music making and enjoy the thrill of playing in an exciting percussion band to produce the rhythms and beats used in Latin, African, Reggae and other popular music styles. In addition, participants will benefit from the following:

1.Develop their confidence and enjoyment of music making
2.Gain an awareness and understanding of reggae rhythms and styles
3.Take part in producing an amazing drum group sound
4.Learn to listen and work with others, in order to achieve the focus of group drumming
5.Have fun! – learn and appreciate other cultures musical heritage

This interactive drumming workshop is full of interest, fun, activity and learning. Everyone is welcome from ages 12+ including those with special needs. No drumming experience is necessary, the workshop is suitable for absolute beginners as well as those with more musical knowledge. Everyone will leave having had fun, realising new musical abilities they naturally possess, and having awakened their own creativity and desire to learn.



The day is being hosted by Steve Laffy. Steve has been a professional drummer gigging, touring and recording for over 35 years. He has performed in the UK and overseas, and at many major venues and events such as Glastonbury Festival and Notting Hill Carnival. Steve has a Diploma in Music Practice from Trinity College, is an Associate Lecturer in Music Practice, and has taught drums at Warwick University. He has published two successful drum tutorial book/CDs, is an experienced coach of drums and percussion and has many years’ experience in facilitating drumming workshops.

There are only 25 spaces and priority will be given to people from BS5 and BS2 postcodes.
