Last year saw Ujima Radio launch a series titled Rumble on the Radio, A “DJ Sound-Clash” where radio presenters took to the airwaves live on-air, to see who could withstand the musical onslaught. The Sound-Clash was part of Black History Month events during October. The listener’s participation was overwhelming and generated a large interest from people throughout the whole of Bristol, the UK and even people tuning in across the world.

So due to popular demand of you the listeners, we have the pleasure to bring the third instalment of Rumble on the Radio: The Love Clash.

Jamie’s surprise visit to Bristol’s number one radio station Ujima 98 was indeed one to remember. Hosted by the ‘Cruising’ drivetime presenter Julian Davis (AKA Mistri) and joined by Poet and Lyrical Minded presenter Milo who recited some poetry while Jamie and his crew enjoyed some rice and peas with jerk chicken.

The first heat of Rumble on the Radio has taken place, and it was a close call, heavyweight shots were fired from any angles, but we still await the knockout blow.

So once again they will be going at it for the rematch, head to head and record for record, in a live radio challenge to raise awareness of the station and celebrate some of the best in Music of Black Origin; which includes of course Hip-Hop, Soul, Reggae, Jazz and RnB.

Reigning out of St Pauls with a track record second to none. Instrumental to the scene for over two decades; it’s the one & only..
DJ STYLE, his speciality 80’s, 90’ RnB Hip Hop & Slow jams.

Stepping up to the challenge , the sweet soul brother from North London, music collector supreme with a Masters in the UK Soul Movement and a number of KO’s on his record it’s the ever versatile The G-Man, subject matter: Motown, Neo-Soul and UK Soul.

The format is simple; each presenter chooses at least one record across three musical themes on each other’s show. Both contenders are looking for a musical knockout so listeners are guaranteed a tuneful treat.

The conclusion will be on Friday 28th October 8-9pm.
This is one not to miss as these two seasoned campaigners battle it out behind the microphone, live on air as they celebrate Music of Black Origin.

For one day only Bristol Zoo will open it’s gates to a day of community celebration and entertainment that is Bristols Big Village Fete.

Spreading over the entire 12 acre site BBVF will offer music, dance, theatre and games to a crowd of 1000s from all communities in the city.

The main lawn will play host to music and dance performances from Reggae to Bhangra and Ballet to Hip Hop. Family games and activities will run all day on the West Lawn from giant jenga to childrens story telling. At the stunning herbaceous area you can experience true relaxation in the form of massage or pedicure, yoga or meditation all set to the beautiful accompaniment of some of Bristols finest Acoustic music.

As well as endless entertainment opportunities crowds will also have a selection of approx 30 stalls to visit, these will be set up throughout the grounds to offer everything from art workshops to locally made produce.

Also Ujima will be joining BBC Radio Bristol live for 2 hours during Carnival Day.  Between 12am and 1pm BBC’s Dr Phil Hammond will be joined by Ujima’s Lady Nia and DJ Style.  From 3pm – 4pm Howard Bentham will give you an update from the heart of the Carnival with Ujima’s Outlook presenters ‘Remi the Remsta’ and Paul Campbell.

The Carnival also coincides with Ujima 3rd Birthday (actually July 4th!) so wish us every success in our fourth year – Bristol’s No 1 Urban Station.

A warm welcome to the third edition of our newsletter.

Here at Ujima Radio CIC, this is our favourite time of year as preparations are in full swing for the annual cultural street-party that is the ST PAULS CARNIVAL! Over 70,000 people are expected to fill the streets of Bristol on 2nd July 2011 and we would love you to join us and enjoy all the fun of carnival.

Carnival is a time for the community to come together but means different things to many people. It can be a chance to celebrate black culture, an event that can appeal to all the whole family to have fun together, a chance for local community groups to promote themselves, for young and old to take part in the procession, maybe eat some rice & peas and jerk chicken, or dance into the early hours with some live music or local DJ!

Speaking of which, we’ll be having a sound system at the junction of Wilder Street and Cave Street. So make sure you come down and say a big Hi to all the presenters and team whilst you listen to some great music and grab some refreshment.

Our events team are also at Bristol Zoo as they celebrate their 175th anniversary along with 30 other community groups on the 16th July 2011.

Another date for your diary is 30th & 31st July where we will be co-hosting the main stage at the Bristol Harbourside Festival in  Queen’s Square.  The first ‘Be Who You Want to Be?’ radio programme has aired, so tune in to our host Junior Saunders every Wednesday 8-10pm. BRISTOL HARBOUR FESTIVAL

The Bristol Harbour Festival is Bristol’s biggest cultural event and one of the biggest free festivals in the country. 2011 is the 40th anniversary of the festival. The main festival weekend will be from Friday 29 July – Sunday 31 July, but the festival will include an additional week from Saturday 23 – Friday 29 July, during which, the harbour will be animated with dragon boat races, strolling entertainment, music on boats – and more. Ujima Radio is pleased to be working in partnership with the Colston Hall to host the main stage in Queen Square. This will include a number of our hand-picked acts performing on each day, and Ujima presenters carrying out the compere duties, come and meet us on the day!

UJIMA GOES TO THE ZOO!

As you may know, Bristol Zoo Gardens are this year celebrating their 175th Birthday! As part of a series of celebratory events, on Saturday 16th July the Zoo will be holding their Big Village Fete. A mixture of performers, artists and craftspeople will be gathering at the Zoo itself and we are delighted to have been selected to be one of the 30 community stalls contributing to this internationally received event. Ujima Radio CIC merchandise will also be sold and of course the traditional raffle results will be aired live on Ujima so look out for the tickets! UJIMA @ ST PAULS CARNIVAL

St. Pauls Carnival has been running consistently ever since 1967. As the carnival grows older, so does the Ujima’s carnival collaborations. This year’s broadcast partners are BBC Radio Bristol, this means sharing live output leading to and on carnival day. You will be able to listen live to the event via BBC Radio Bristol and Ujima 98, with programmes featuring Ujima Presenters. HELLO’S AND GOODBYES

Here at Ujima we are sad to have to say good bye to some familiar faces, including two of our backroom staff. Chris Heigham who has been part of our team and provided great support with programming and production, and Pauline Orchard has helped form our Marketing team and made links with the local community and businesses. Our thanks and best wishes to them both. Also presenter Dezzie Ranks is no longer with the station, we wish him all the best. On the plus side though, we are pleased to welcome new presenters Gemma Myers & Dan Stern, both taking over the new Healthy Living Show on Sundays and new addition to the Living Show, Vanessa.
