Mayoo Girls in Uniform
Ujima Radio was visited recently by an incredibly inspiring young man from Kenya, Jonathan from the Maasai Tribe which is currently touring the UK for his charity, MAYOO (Maasai Youth Outreach Organisation), which he founded 6 years ago.
The charity dedicates itself to providing shelter & access to education for girls fleeing FGM & abusive marriages. MAYOO also provides health education workshops covering topics such as contraception, HIV/AIDS, they also work on providing access to water which is a big problem and includes education on preventing waterborne diseases.
He says his village, with a population of 20, 000 Maasai has no electricity.
Currently the safe house hosts 150 girls aged 5-13 years old. 50 of whom are currently attending secondary school.
Jonathan was orphaned at 5 years old and an American family sponsored his entire education from 5 years old right through to university graduation at the age of 18. Now he wants to return the favour of kindness to the community.
